Familiar Ground

Kotikylä, 2026

Familiar Ground explores a place that has been part of my life for decades. I returned to photograph a familiar environment shaped by memories, lived experience, and everyday routes, while also observing how the place continues to change over time.

The series was created in the Päijät-Häme region of Finland during the winter and spring of 2026. My working process was based on repeated walks and slow observation. I became attentive to light, weather, seasonal change, and subtle traces of human presence. Snow conceals and reveals the landscape, familiar views shift, and the surroundings occasionally begin to feel unfamiliar.

The project brings personal memory into contact with the present. The place itself remains familiar, but my way of seeing it has changed. Familiar Ground examines this shift and the ways in which lived experience, the passage of time, and memory shape how a familiar environment is perceived and how a sense of attachment to place is formed.
